BYD Brings Advanced Intelligent Driving to Budget Cars, Aiming to Redefine the Global Auto Market

At BYD's recent Intelligent Strategy Conference, the company officially announced its plan to equip all its models with advanced intelligent driving technology, centered around the “God’s Eye” system, to achieve “intelligent driving for all.” This move has garnered widespread attention in the automotive industry and is seen as BYD’s latest market disruption following its previous achievements of making hybrid vehicles as affordable as gasoline cars and even making EVs cheaper than their fuel-powered counterparts.

BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu stated, “2025 will be the first year of intelligent driving for all. In the next two to three years, intelligent driving will become an essential feature, just like seat belts and airbags, and will represent a new hallmark of Chinese automobiles.” This strategy reflects BYD’s forward-thinking approach and continuous investment in intelligent driving technology. Years ago, BYD began heavily investing in R&D, assembling a massive research team, with over 5,000 employees dedicated to intelligent driving and more than 1,000 experts focused on core algorithms. Leveraging its status as the world's largest NEV manufacturer, BYD has accumulated vast amounts of user data, forming China’s largest cloud database for vehicles, which provides a solid foundation for the rapid iteration of intelligent driving technologies.

The “God’s Eye” advanced intelligent driving system has been developed into three different versions tailored to various brands and models:

- Version A (DiPilot600): Equipped with three LiDAR sensors, designed for BYD’s ultra-luxury brand Yangwang, targeting vehicles over $150,000.

- Version B (DiPilot300): Uses a single LiDAR sensor, suited for Denza and BYD’s high-end models.

- Version C (DiPilot100): Relies on a tri-camera setup as its core, covering BYD’s mainstream models.

Version C integrates front-facing tri-camera 5R12V sensing hardware and an end-to-end algorithm, enabling three core functions: Highway Navigation-on-Autopilot (HNOA), Automated Valet Parking (AVP), and Memory Navigation-on-Autopilot (MNOA). For example, HNOA can achieve 1,000 km of hands-free driving on highways, while its AEB function reliably stops at speeds of up to 100 km/h. The AVP system boasts a 99% success rate in valet parking, significantly reducing driver fatigue. Using a vision-based approach with multi-sensor fusion, Version C achieves high-level intelligent driving capabilities without relying on LiDAR, making advanced driver assistance systems more affordable and accessible, especially for vehicles priced at 100,000 RMB (under $14,000) and below.

During the conference, BYD announced that 21 models will be the first to feature “God’s Eye” Version C. The only exceptions are the base versions of the Qin PLUS DM-i, Seal 05 DM-i, and Seagull, which will not be equipped with this technology. All other trims will come with advanced intelligent driving features, bringing the vision of “intelligent driving for all” closer to reality. Notably, the cheapest model with “God’s Eye” C costs just 78,800 RMB (approximately $10,800)—the second-lowest trim of the Seagull.

The Seagull Intelligent Driving Edition, equipped with BYD’s “God’s Eye” system, is a remarkable showcase of cutting-edge technology.

- Hardware-wise, it features three front-facing cameras that precisely capture road conditions, 12 intelligent driving cameras positioned around the vehicle for 360-degree monitoring, and five millimeter-wave radars that continuously detect the distance and speed of surrounding objects.

- Additionally, 12 ultrasonic radars enhance close-range detection, providing precise assistance for parking and other maneuvers.

This high-end hardware configuration is on par with, if not superior to, many vehicles in the 200,000 RMB ($30,000+) price range.

It is evident that "intelligent driving democratization" will be BYD’s key focus in 2025. Since entering the automotive industry in 2007, Chairman Wang Chuanfu has set a bold goal: to surpass Toyota and become the world’s No.1 automaker by 2025. Whether BYD can achieve this ambition remains to be seen, but based on its current trajectory, the company already possesses the strength and potential to challenge for the top spot globally.
