From January 17 to 22, 2025, New Delhi hosted the highly anticipated Auto Expo India 2025, one of India’s largest and most influential automotive industry events. This year’s exhibition focused on the practical application and market promotion of electric vehicles (EVs), showcasing multiple models designed to meet the needs of the Indian market. Numerous automotive brands presented their latest EV technologies and products, further accelerating the growth of India's EV market.

Indian automaker Tata Motors unveiled key models such as the Harrier EV and Sierra ICE at the event. Public data indicates that 7 out of every 10 vehicles on Indian roads come from Tata Motors, highlighting its immense market influence.

Tata Motors’ Electric Strategy: Harrier EV & Sierra ICE

The Harrier EV is Tata Motors' all-electric version of the existing fuel-powered Harrier, a mid-size SUV. It is considered a core model in Tata’s "electric vehicle strategy." The vehicle is expected to be equipped with Tata’s self-developed electric powertrain and may use the EMA electric modular platform, which is shared with models such as the Curvv.ev and Avinya, optimizing range and performance. Positioned in the mid-to-high-end electric SUV market, the Harrier EV will compete with models like the Tesla Model Y and BYD Atto 3, further solidifying Tata’s leadership in India’s EV market, where it currently holds over 60% market share.

Meanwhile, the Sierra ICE is a mid-to-large fuel-powered SUV based on the ALFA ARC platform. Although it shares the same design language as the electric Sierra EV, it features a traditional internal combustion engine. The Sierra ICE aims to fill Tata’s gap in the premium fuel-powered SUV segment, competing with models like the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. Additionally, Tata Motors benefits from its ownership of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), leveraging Land Rover’s technological expertise to enhance its brand value.

Suzuki’s First Pure EV: eVitara

As global automakers accelerate their transition to electric vehicles, Suzuki has finally introduced its first pure EV—eVitara—15 years after Nissan first launched the affordable Leaf.

Maruti Suzuki, a joint venture between Japan’s Suzuki and the Indian government established in 1982, is now one of India’s largest car manufacturers. The newly launched eVitara is an electric SUV produced in India, with plans for export to other markets. In some regions, it will also be sold under Toyota’s bZ series as a new member of the lineup.

The eVitara features an exterior with rugged off-road elements and is available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations, with varying horsepower depending on the model. In terms of battery capacity, it offers 49kWh and 61kWh options, although the official driving range has yet to be announced. The model will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Motor Gujarat plant in India, starting in spring 2025, and is expected to launch in Europe, India, and Japan by summer 2025.

In terms of design philosophy, the eVitara follows the concept of an "Emotional Versatile Cruiser," combining advanced technology with durability. The exterior retains much of the styling from the concept eVX, particularly the upper front fascia, while the lower section has a more rugged, off-road-oriented appearance. This aligns with Suzuki’s emphasis on high-tech innovation and adventurous spirit, making the eVitara an attractive choice for consumers.

India’s EV Market: A Growing Opportunity

As the world’s most populous country, India presents a massive and rapidly growing automotive market. With increasing consumer demand and continuous improvements in infrastructure, the country’s automotive sector holds tremendous growth potential. The Auto Expo India 2025 not only provided a platform for automakers to showcase their latest EV technologies but also offered valuable opportunities for companies to connect directly with the Indian and broader Asian markets.

Looking ahead, as EV technology advances and consumer acceptance grows, India’s electric vehicle market is set for rapid expansion, contributing to the global automotive industry's shift toward a greener and more intelligent future.
